Here is my seventh program: Mechanics's Scheduler [TM]. It offers
mechanics an unprecedented level of software performance in scheduling
vehicles, billing customers, and following through on auto estimates.
Mechanics's Scheduler [TM] is consistent with the high performance standard
that all of my software now adheres to: Workstation on a Disk [TM].
Workstation on a Disk [TM] is my commitment to you to deliver the
functionality of a $3,900 industry-specific workstation in the form of a set
of shareware disks.
Providing the mechanic with a powerful administrative tool, Mechanics'
Scheduler [TM] tracks all activities--maintenance, billings, and auto repair
estimates--for one billion customers, one hundred vehicles per customer.
To see this, please go to the Main Program Menu and observe selection 1:
1) Customer File, with Vehicles
After you have selected option 1, you will see:
______________________________________
A to ADD data
G to GET data
L for LABELS
H for Help
R to Return
______________________________________
This program will always display the Vehicle file on the Customer Get
screen. By entering 'G' for Get, you will then branch to the individual
customer records. On the first one in the test data, for example, you will
see this on the top:
Enter F5 for Vehicles [3 in file]
As you enter 'F5', you will then see the Menu for the Vehicle File. Each
customer has a unique Menu for the Vehicle File, into which you can enter up
to 100 vehicles. To read an explanation of the options available at this
menu, please enter 'H' for Help.
You enter and update all vehicles for each customer at their respective
Vehicle File menus. Entering 'R' to return to the prior record, you will
then return to the customer associated with this vehicle file. As you enter
F6 or Act Now [TM], you are displayed a light bar selection of all vehicles
in the Vehicle file.
Bridging the gap:
Ease of Use versus Power
The most daunting issue today in software design is the tradeoff in ease of
use versus power. Simply put, business programs that have a short learning
curve ultimately create little economic value. Software, however, that is
capable of creating economic value in a business generally has a steep
learning curve.
Through the 'LITE' option, Mechanics's Scheduler [TM] achieves the best of
both worlds. For the power or frequent user, all features in the program
are available intact. For the occasional user or for the temporary data
entry-type person, two-thirds of the screens and most of the functionality
can be inhibited through the 'LITE' option. To see this, please go to the
Other Options Menu and observe this selection:
M) 'LITE' option [now Off]
As you experiment with this new feature by pressing the single 'M' key
repeatedly, you can see how simple it is to use. Not only does this 'LITE'
option remove two-thirds of the screens, but relative cursor addressing
takes place on the remaining screens. This repositions the cursor correctly
on the reduced screen image. Finally, through one simple external logical
'key', this 'LITE' option can be permanently locked in place by an
administrator for a prolonged period, then just as quickly and without any
disruption of work unlocked later.
Mechanics's Scheduler [TM] is compatible with MS-DOS [TM] 2.0 through MS-DOS
[TM] 5.0, and has even been field-tested with DR DOS [TM] 6.0.
As for hardware, this program will run across the entire spectrum, from the
simplest of XT's to 486 computers.
